We couldn’t have wished for a better weather start of our trip in Tasmania.
We landed yesterday, picked up luggage and rental car, checked in to Hotel Charles Launceston, and promptly went for a walk to stretch the legs after the long trip to get here. In doing so we just caught the last of the evening sun producing that warm glow on the buildings.

The morning announced itself hazy with the promise of sun so we set out early for a walk towards Cataract Gorge Reserve a mere 20 minute walk from our hotel. It indeed turned out to be a gorgeous morning. We started off on the Cataract Walk from Kings Bridge to the Alexandra Suspension Bridge. From there we walked the Duck Reach Trail to the old Duck Reach Power Station and then back via Reedy Gully and Snake Gully Tracks to the Cliff Grounds for coffee and tea. We couldn’t resist a ride on the Basin chairlift across the South Esk River to the start of the Zig Zag Track back to Kings Bridge.
From there we walked along the River embankment back to the city and kinda did a combination of 2-3 suggested city heritage walks which took us past many of Launceston’s nicest buildings. All in all a very nice first introduction to the city.
