Day 63 (1,524 to 1,539 kms)
Very nice day with a combination of forest and native bush. The trail notes said the 15 kms would take 6 to 7 hours, but since we have had recent dry weather the trail is not as muddy as it can be. And therefore I was able to make a pretty good pace. I stopped along the way for a sit down and a hot cup of coffee. Someone was kind enough to leave a table in the middle of the bush for me.
As part of my campaign to slow down a little, I found a good spot along the river and enjoyed the surroundings. I also took a very refreshing swim. But can’t sit around all day, and not much longer I was at Ian and Frank’s Hut. The hut had the usual 5 year old magazines as reading material, and I spent time relaxing and reading. Dinner was another cold soaked effort.
The weather forecast for the next week continues to look good, and I hope it remains so. The Tararua Ranges are famous for bad weather, and the three crossing should not be attempted when the weather is bad. Especially as a solo walker. There is a bail out option tomorrow if the weather turns.
