Queen Charlotte Track

Day 72 to 75 (1,741 to 1,810 kms)

Caroline and I walked the Queen Charlotte in style, moving from nice lodge to nice lodge. Our luggage was transported for us. Such a nice way to see this wonderful part of New Zealand.

We left Wellington early and had a lovely crossing on the Blue Bridge ferry. This meant we had some time in a very wet Picton. Fortunately we could explore the small town between rain showers. And enjoyed the evening in the pub with a local jam session.

The following day we took the ferry to the northern end of the track via Motuara Island, a pest free sanctuary. Had perfect weather for the walk from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge, enjoying the amazing scenery. Caroline and I sat on the porch of the lodge watching the sun disappear over the hills before taking in the best meal of the trip. The next day was a repeat of the first, a little shorter, making it to Punga Cove and the lodge there. This time we sat on the wharf to watch the sun go down.

The last two days I (Stephen) would do on my own, as Caroline was having trouble with her shoes. Caroline took a water taxi to The Portege, the third lodge. I walked and got there before the first and only rain decided to bucket down. This night we actually saw the sun set before taking our final dinner on the track. Life is good. Day 4 I walked to Anakiwa before taking a water taxi back to Picton for another lovely night.

We were delyaed several hours on the ferry back to Wellington as the earlier ferry was stuck in the only ferry dock and had to clear out before our ferry could get in. The return ferry was otherwise very nice.

Very glad to start the South Island of the Te Araroa and share with Caroline.
