National Park Village

Day 48 (1143 – 1172 kms)

National Park Village is a ski town. It is pretty quiet during the summer. But I was looking forward to staying here and seeing what this little village has to offer. Not much I am afraid.

I set off from Mangatepopo Hut with my sights firmly on Whakapapa and the promise of coffee. Only 10 kms away I made good time and did not stop for a break. I was rewarded with coffee as expected and a apple danish, that ended up being a custard filled chocolate pastry. The trail getting to Whakapapa was in good shape with all river crossings either dry or nicely bridged. I had Mt Ruapehu to my left and the view was clear. Often Mt Ruapehu is covered in cloud during the mornings.

Over coffee I made a few phone calls to secure accommodation for the net few nights. I still have to arrange transport from Whakahoro, but I have a few more days to sort that out.

The scenery along the trail from Whakapapa to Mangahuia Campsite was really good. Sure, the trail was a bit muddy in places, but the alpine scenery made up for. Once at the campsite I took an extended break and had lunch. Water was welcome, which was a welcome relief. Another 6 kms along the road I pulled to National Park Village and the gas station to find 5 other TA walkers scoffing down sugary delights.

I stayed at the YHA and enjoyed a meal at the pub which was next door. My foot continues to be mildly irritating, but hopefully it is healing (I suspect it is not healing).

Mt Rhuapehu standing proudly.
Whakapapa Village in the distance. And the famous and now closed Chateux.
Bridges help keep the feet dry.
Amazing scenery
The bush track was a little muddy, but all good.
Back on the road for the last stretch into National Park Village.
The path from Taumarunui has been long with great scenery. Whanganui can also be spelt Wanganui.
Fine dining at the pub.
