Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Day 47 (1118 – 1143 kms)

Located in Tongariro National Park, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of new Zealand’s most iconic day hikes. It is also part of the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk and part of Te Araroa. I did the crossing a few years back, but have been looking forward to doing it again. And was really hoping for some good weather, and the weather did not disappoint.

I was up and away early (6:30am start). It would be a longish day, and might as well start early. The first 7 kilometers are along the road just to get to the start of the trail. The morning was crisp and the walking was fast. My blister was not bothering me to much, but I knew it was there.

Thousands of walkers make the crossing each day, but literally 99% of them start in the West, as this is much easier with less elevation gain. Te Ararora walkers typically start in the East and walk West. This has one huge advantage, you have most of the track to yourself for a good part of the day. I was so fortunate to be able to walk through the lower forest section all by myself for several hours. Did not see a single sole. Once above the tree-line, things changed with day hikers coming from the other side. Once I made the top, I was able to look down on Red Crater with only a few other people, with the vast majority heading down. It was a wonderful day. I stopped at Blue Lake for a sizable lunch and laterin the day had lovely views of Emerald Lakes and Mt Ngauruhoe.

I got to the Mangatepopo Hut before the rain came in. Fortunately by 7:30pm the rain stopped and we could enjoy a dry evening outside. I stayed in the hut, which was a good idea, as the wind was howling. It was a busy hut, with lots of activity. I slept like a log.
