May 10th to May 22nd, 2025

Our original plan had been to travel south of the Great Lakes and explore within the United States. But, as often happens on the road, we changed our minds and decided to head into Canada a bit earlier. We had two friends in Toronto we were keen to see, and we were both excited to visit Niagara Falls — which did not disappoint.

Ontario treated us well. There was plenty of nature, good hiking, and a relaxed vibe that felt a bit different from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. A style that felt a little more familiar to us.

It was still early in the season, so not everything was up and running yet. The border crossing into Canada couldn’t have been easier — less than five minutes at the checkpoint, a few standard questions, and we were through.

During our time in Ontario, we mostly stayed in campgrounds. Much of the province is privately owned farmland, and, as is often the case in Canada, many of the most scenic lakeside spots are already occupied by cottages and homes. That said, we did venture north to Algonquin Provincial Park — and it was lovely.

One of the highlights of our Ontario detour was meeting Bruce and Krista. They’re in the process of building their own overland truck, and we popped in to introduce ourselves and swap ideas. They’re a super lovely couple, and we hope our paths cross again someday.

Crossing into Canada was a breeze.
Spring is coming.
Spent a few nights in the dunes. A chance to walk along the beach and enough sunny weather for a swim. Somehow managed to get ticks.
This lovely beach is also a bird sanctuary. Long Point Provincial Park.
Niagara Falls. Bucket list item.
When in Rome …
Amazing sight.
Enjoying downtown Toronto.
Toronto by night.
Crossing the 45th parallel.
Algornquin Provincial Park. Advantages of being early in the season. Campgrounds are not full.
Great place to relax for a few days and some good hikes and bike trails.
