May 23rd to May 31st, 2025
We continued east toward New Brunswick, bouncing along the rough roads of Quebec. Our original plan was to return to Montreal — a city we hadn’t visited in nearly 30 years — and also to catch up with a friend in Quebec City.
Montreal proved a little challenging for us. We had hoped to stay in a nice hotel to celebrate our 34th anniversary, but we couldn’t find one with both charm and safe overnight parking for Molly. On our second night in Montreal was more successful, as we managed to find a small campground just a short Uber ride from downtown Montreal. The city is big — vibrant, bustling, and full of energy. We spent the day wandering around, exploring shopping malls, and, of course, eating out. Cities are perfect for that.
We were making good progress toward our objective — maybe too good. After Montreal, we decided to change our plans. Two weeks of farmland and busy cities were starting to wear on us, so we opted to take the long road to New Brunswick — via Labrador and Newfoundland. It would add about 3,500 kilometers to the trip, but a quick check of ferry availability confirmed it was doable. As soon as we left Quebec City, the scenery shifted dramatically — and we immediately felt more at home on the open road.
We really enjoyed our time in Quebec City, and it was especially lovely to reconnect with Nathalie and meet Danny. Caroline and Nathalie first met many years ago in Tibet, and spending an evening with them brought back wonderful memories.
