Getting to Nome, Alaska

Thursday, August 16, 2012

We had an interesting time getting to Nome Alaska, the departure point for our trip through the New West Passage. It should have been a simple flight, but low clouds and maintenance on the main runway made landings difficult.

We took off from Anchorage Alaska for the 1 hour flight North, first to Kotzebue and then onto Nome. In the final moments or about 400 feet from the ground, of the landing the Captain pulled up and took us back to Anchorage. We scrambled to find a hotel for the night and were booked on the flight at 6am the next morning.

The following morning took us to Kotzebue, for a second attempt. We found out that no flights had successfully landed in the Nome for the past 5 days. This was not encouraging. But luck would be in our favour, and the made the challenging landing to loud applause from all the passengers. Our pilot really nailed that landing.

Although we had made it, not all of our bags made. Actually, Caroline’s bags failed to make it. Fortunately they arrived the next day and before the ship set sail to Kotzebue, to pick up all the other stranded passages.

Excited to be heading to Alaska. Here we are about to take-off from San Francisco airport.
At Anchorage Airport, waiting to see if our plane would take-off. Landings at Nome where difficult.
Taking off from Kotzebue and heading to Nome (or so we thought)
I guess we are not landing in that soup.
En route to Nome. Take 2. This photo was taken at 7:42 in the morning.
Made It!
Some of our luggage made it, but not all.
