Herschel Island, Canada

Thursday, August 23, 2012

After a lot of sailing we made it to the very northern shores of western Canada, a journey that was over 1,000 nautical miles. We stopped in the Kotzebue Sound to pick up fresh crew, some passengers displaced by Nome airport closure and bunker on some fuel. We basically spent 4 days sailing.

We had to clear immigration and customs into Canada, and Herschel Island is where we did this. This process was quite involved, but eventually us and the ship was cleared. The immigration officers had to be flown in from somewhere, as Herschel Island has a population of zero.

We spent a nice afternoon on the Island, just wandering around and feel good to be able to stretch our legs.

It is getting a little colder as we head North.
Sighting our first ice-berg.
First sighting of the Island.
Rob inspects the helicopter which arrived to join us for the journey.
