Tahsis and Gold River Highway

Sunday and Monday, September 10th and 11th, 2023

It was a bit of a trek to get to Tahsis, but we had heard good things. Along the way we stopped at Upana Caves, which were modest but a nice diversion from the driving, Unfortunately the road was not great, and we bumped along at a snail’s pace avoiding as many potholes as possible. And it was getting late. So, we stopped short and parked up at near the Conuma River Hatchery. Nothing special, but it was good to get off the road before it got to dark and wet.

In morning we did the remaining 30 kms, which turned out to be mainly sealed road. Late lunch in Tahsis was very nice, and the sun was cooperating. The township is not much to speak of, with the population dwindling. A town bear made an appearance, which was nice.

Upana Caves. Modest, but worth a quick look.
Bear in the wild. spotted from the road.
Camp for the night. Free recreation site with a couple of spots. Not much, but much needed as the road was bad and we were tired.
Camp along Gold River Highway. We had some limited road noise, but otherwise very peaceful.
